Murie gets 60 years for attempted murder, assault

Fort Madison will have to serve at 22.5 years on assault charges

FORT MADISON - On April 12, 2025, Kristopher Robin Murie, 45, of Fort Madison, Iowa was charged with Sexual Abuse in the 1st Degree, Attempt to Commit Murder, and Burglary in the 1st Degree. These charges stemmed from an event that occurred on or about April 11, 2025 through and including April 12, 2025 wherein Murie entered the home of the victim with the intent to commit an assault and while armed with a weapon. Upon entry, Murie did attempt to kill the victim, then sexually assaulted her.
On December 1, 2025, Murie plead guilty to Burglary in the 1st Degree while armed with a dangerous weapon in violation of Iowa Code sections 713.3 and 902.7, Attempt to Commit Murder in violation of Iowa Code Section 707.11 and 902.12, both of which carry a maximum sentence of 25 years (both subject to mandatory minimum sentences before parole eligibility), and Sexual Abuse in the 3rd Degree in violation of Iowa Code Section 709.4 which carries a sentence of 10 years within the Iowa Department of Corrections and sexual offender registration requirements.
January 23, 2026, Murie was sentenced to the maximum indeterminate sentence of 60 years to be served within the Iowa Department of Corrections with a mandatory minimum of 22 ½ years to be served before the possibility of parole. He is also subject to a lifetime special sentence, and sex offender registration requirements. Murie remains in the custody of the Lee County Sheriff pending transfer to the Iowa Department of Corrections.
The Fort Madison Police Department was the responding agency and led the investigation on the case. This matter was prosecuted by the Lee County Attorney.
