BELLE PLAINES – The Fort Madison boys' wrestling team rebounded from a sluggish weekend in Cedar Rapids last Saturday to take second at the Kurt Hinschberger Invitational.
The boys racked up 175.5 points to finish behind Logan-Magnolia’s 234 in Belle Plaines.
Logan Pennock earned the lone championship on the day for the Bloodhounds with a first-place finish at 132 lbs. Pennock went 3-0 on the day and recorded three pins enroute to the title.
Pennock (26-5) went into the meet seeded 1st at the top of the bracket and breezed through with first-period pins in the quarters and semis and then a pin just into the second period over Matthew Mintle of Lynville-Sully at 2:14 for the title and 26 team points.
Fort Madison had four others in title matches who came up with runners-up finishes.
At 175 lbs., Gavin Callahan took 2nd place after getting a bye in the first round and then downed WACO’s Harley Larrimore by fall in the 3rd period. That put him in the title match where he suffered a first-period fall to Aplington-Parkersburg/Grimes Center’s Mason Pruisner.
Cliff Stewart captured 2nd place at 215 lbs., going 3 of 4 with his only loss to Class 2A’s 8th-ranked Jesse Brouwer by major decision at 10-1. Stewart score a tech fall in first-round wrestling and then recorded two falls in his other wins.
Fort Madison’s Aaron Warner took runner-up at 285 with a bye and a disqualification win in early wrestling. He lost by fall to Ben Squires of Lynnville-Sully with 19 seconds left in the match.
Ren Watson took 2nd place and lost by fall to the state’s top 1A wrestler at 190 lbs. in Louden Huisinga of WACO 1:52 into the match. Watson won by fall in his other two matches of the day in the bracket.
James Fuller (120) and Oliver Schelich (106) both captured 3rd place for Fort Madison. Rainer Johnson was fourth at 150 lbs. and Jack Benner was 4th at 165 lbs. Eric Cornelis was 5th at 157 and Noah Swigart was 5th at 138.
