Posted

Richard Lee Nelson, age 86, of Keokuk, died unexpectedly on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at his home. Rich was born February 26, 1938, in Keokuk, Iowa, to John R. and Edith (Caulkins) Nelson. The youngest of four children, he was inseparable from his brother, Ron, who led the two on many adventures. Rich graduated from Keokuk High School in 1956 and married his high school sweetheart, Sally Dains, in 1957, a love that lasted 68 years.
Rich lived in Keokuk all his life, working first as a sports reporter and photographer for the Daily Gate City and then as a Production Manager for Hubinger Co, which later merged with H.J. Heinz. He was a member of the Church of the Firstborn in Greenbrier, Tennessee, and an avid supporter of Dayspring Academy. A man of few words, yet Rich was known for his sense of humor, regaling his extended family with hilarious stories. Laughter filled the room whenever Uncle Rich was around. In his retired years, he took pride in tending a thriving vegetable garden that produced bushels of tomatoes that no one could forget.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; two children: Rod Nelson (Verna) and Jill Hoff (Pete); his granddaughter Kara Hundley (Eric); his grandson Matthew Nelson (Trish); two great-grandchildren: Brayden and Natalee Nelson; his sister-in-law, Susan Dains Stewart; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edith Nelson; and his siblings, Mary N. Thomas, Bonnie J. Wright and John Ronald Nelson.
According to his wishes, no services will be held.
