Railfan cam celebrating sixth anniversary

Posted

For many Fort Madison residents, the sound of a passing train has become part of everyday life. But for thousands of railfans from around the world, those same trains are the reason they travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to visit our community.
This week marks the sixth anniversary of the Fort Madison Virtual Railfan camera, which was installed during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to keep people connected to our community. What started as a simple idea has grown into one of the most successful Virtual Railfan locations in the country, with more than 60 million views on YouTube.
The camera showcases one of the busiest rail corridors in the Midwest, where 60 to 80 trains pass through here each day. While visitors arrive to photograph locomotives and experience the rail traffic, many quickly discover everything else our community has to offer. They spend the night in local hotels, eat at our restaurants, shop downtown, visit our museums, and enjoy the beauty of the Mississippi River.
Some railfans now return every few months. Others have purchased homes here or are making plans to relocate because of the quality of life they discovered while train watching.
Tourism comes in many forms, and rail tourism has become one of Fort Madison's greatest success stories. Sometimes what we see every day is exactly what someone else has been dreaming of seeing their entire life.
