Reader says Republicans deserve better

Posted

Dear Editor

In her new TV ad, Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson claims she will work with anyone to get results for Iowa. My question is, what result is she trying to get? Hinson has supported the massive DOGE cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, cuts that make it more difficult for Iowa veterans to receive timely care. She claims our veterans deserve better. I agree they deserve better than a president who refers to them as “losers and suckers.” Members of the military deserve better than to be led by an incompetent Fox News host who thinks he knows more than career flag officers.
DOGE and Trump, bolstered by the Heritage Foundation, have subjected the VA to workforce reductions of at least 30,000 positions raising concerns about delays in processing times for benefits and claims. Every state has lost Veteran Affairs staff. They have canceled contracts for help desk services, and various medical or administrative support systems. VA employees have reported the disruption or cancellation of specialized support services like therapy groups and transportation services for disabled veterans.

The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 plan for the country involves the privatization of healthcare, automated denials at higher rates, and the reclassification of career civil servants to political appointees, allowing for their dismissal at will. Hinson voted with the Heritage Foundation 85% of the time.
This November we finally have a chance to elect someone who has been a true champion for veterans – not someone who trots out good talking points without the record to back it up. I’ve made it clear who I’m supporting, but it is important that Ashley Hinson has to go. Whoever you’re supporting, it’s time for change this fall.
