I grew up believing you shouldn’t have to leave Southeast Iowa to find a good job, raise a family and build a life. That’s why the proposed $15 billion steel project in Lee County is so exciting. If it gets across the finishline, it could bring at least 1,700 permanent jobs to our area, along with thousands of construction jobs while the plant is being built.
For Lee County, the impact would go well beyond the plant itself. More good-paying jobs mean more families putting down roots here, more customers walking through the doors of our small businesses and more opportunities for our kids to stay close to home and build their futures here. Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Washington and Blaine Watkins in Des Moines understand that communities like ours deserve opportunities and investment like this. Both have been strong advocates for southeast Iowa and for the people and businesses that call this area home.
I voted for Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Blaine Watkins before, and I plan to vote for both of them again this November. I want representatives who will keep fighting to bring jobs, investment, and opportunity back home to southeast Iowa.
There’s still a long road ahead before the first steel is produced, but this is an opportunity Lee County cannot afford to take for granted.
