LEE COUNTY - Fort Madison and Burlington are always on course to meet in the girls regional soccer tournaments, and this season is no exception even though both are in the Class 2A state rankings.
Fort Madison (10-1-1), ranked 14th in Class 2A, will open the Region 4 tournament by playing host to Keokuk (5-10) in a quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. May 28 at the Baxter Sports Complex. The winner will play at 13th-ranked Burlington (12-2-1) in a 7 p.m. semifinal on June 2 at Bracewell Stadium.
Burlington won the Southeast Conference, with Fort Madison having clinched second place. The two teams have met in four of the last five seasons in the regional semifinals, with the Bloodhounds winning in 2021 and 2023 and the Grayhounds winning the last two seasons.
Fort Madison swept Keokuk in Southeast Conference play this season, winning 4-0 at Keokuk on April 13 and 8-0 at home on April 30.
The Bloodhounds lost to the Grayhounds 5-0 in an April 16 road match before battling them to a 2-2 draw on May 4.
The other side of the bracket has Mount Pleasant (0-11) playing at Davenport North on May 28, with the winner playing at fourth-ranked North Scott (10-1-3) on June 2.
The regional final will be June 4 at a site to be determined.
Central Lee (0-12) will open Class 1A Region 2 play at Fairfield (4-7-1) in a first-round game on May 26. The winner will play at No. 15 Iowa City Regina (9-3) on May 28
The other part of the Hawks’ side of the bracket has Washington (7-6) playing at Mid-Prairie (10-3) in a May 28 quarterfinal winner. The semifinal will be June 2 at Iowa City Regina.
Wapello (2-8) plays at Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union in a May 26 first-round game. The winner advances to play at No. 2 Davenport Assumption (8-2-1) on May 28.
The other part of that bracket has Mediapolis (6-4-1) playing at Notre Dame (6-4-2) on May 28. The semifinal on that side of the bracket will be June 2 at Davenport Assumption, with the regional final scheduled for June 4 at a site to be determined.
