Riddle lands title at Gary Curtis Invite

CEDAR RAPIDS – Fort Madison’s boy wrestlers took 6th place at the Gary Curtis Invitational at Highland High School in Riverside Saturday afternoon.
Nolan Riddle led the Bloodhounds with a title at 157 lbs. Riddle is trying to get back to the IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament after a second day exit in 2023. The senior scored a 14-0 major decision over Washington’s Chase Greiner, his second win over Greiner this week, to take the championship and score 28 points for the Hounds.
Riddle went 4-0 on the day with two major decisions and two falls in early wrestling action.
Ike Thacher, wrestling at 190 lbs., and Cory Arnett at 285 lbs. both captured second place with Thacher scoring 22 points and Arnett garnering 20 for the Hounds.
Thacher suffered another loss to WACO’s Louden Huisenga, this time by a 5-3 decision. On Thursday, Thacher lost to Huisenga 6-4 in a dual match. Thacher led the match 3-0 90 seconds into the second period, but Huisenga was able to get a reversal before the end of the period to cut into the Bloodhound’s lead at 3-2. Huisenga chose the bottom to start period three and scored an escape at 1:20 and then got Thacher compromised for a takedown with :30 left in the match. Huisenga was warned for stalling with 15 seconds left in the match, but Thacher couldn’t escape for the 5-3 loss.
Arnett won 2-1 on the day with a pin of Alburnett’s Josiah Redel in the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye. In the finals, the Hound junior (13-7) won in an ultimate tiebreaker over West Branch’s Logan Wright. The two were tied at one at the end of regulation wrestling. Wright was cautioned for stalling in the first overtime, but he recorded an escape with 12 seconds left in OT 2. Arnett responded with an escape at :21 of OT 3 to tie things up at 2 before getting an escape in the double OT taking the bottom to start the frame for the win advancing to the title match with Columbus/W-MU’s Russel Coil. Coil jumped out to 8-0 lead after two periods and then got a 2-point takedown in the third period that he converted to the pin for the title.
Joe Hartman captured fifth at 165 lbs. to give Fort Madison 17 more team points.
Alburnett won the event with 272.5 points, while Wilton (232), West Branch (183), Columbus/W-MU (183) and Washington (126.5) rounded out the top five.
