Riddle takes 1st at FM Invitational

FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds earned one first-place finish over this weekend’s 23-team Fort Madison Invitational at the Hound Dome.
Dubuque Hempstead won the two-day event with 382 points, followed by Clear Creek-Amana with 376.4. Fort Madison’s varsity finished 10^th with 242 points. Fort Madison's junior varsity was 23^rd with 23 points.
Nolan Riddle was the sole champion at 157, running through the bracket with six wins, scoring pins in all but one of the matches – the championship match with Washington’s Chase Greiner.
An action-filled first period had Riddle up by a point after an early takedown. Greiner scored the 2-point reversal, but Riddle would escape for a point. Greiner would get another 2-point score with :41 seconds remaining in the period before the Bloodhound was able to roll-up a reversal with just two seconds remaining in the period to take a 5-4 lead into the second period.
Greiner would choose a down start in the second period to try to tie the match with an escape, but Riddle would maintain control all through the period, getting a two-point nearfall with :30 left in the period for a 7-4 lead heading into the final two minutes.
This time Riddle would start down, looking for a quick escape. He would never get the point on the escape, but literally did one better with a reversal 37 seconds into the period that he would ride to the title.
Riddle, the 7^th ranked 157 lb. wrestler in the state in 3A, improves to 20-4 with the title.
The Hounds' next best finish was Logan Pennock at 132 lbs. Pennock had to wrestle nine times over the two days. Pennock came out of pool wrestling Friday as the No. 2 seed in the B pool after going 4-1 with a round 5 loss to Benton Community’s Elijah Kupka in a 13-10 decision.
The Fort Madison junior nearly had that match in the first 30 seconds when he scored a takedown 18 seconds into the match and nearly got Kupka’s shoulders down for a 5-point early lead, but Kupka would score a reversal and his own nearfall with less than 20 seconds left in the first period.
Pennock started down in the second period and, after a minute of trying to get out of Kupka’s control, suffered a two- and three-point nearfall within 15 seconds of each other. Pennock would get a reversal in a very active final minute of wrestling in period 2. Pennock would get a penalty point with 26 seconds left, but Kupka would be awarded 2 points with :02 left in the period by officials for an 11-8 lead over the Bloodhound. Kupka would carry the 3-point advantage through the third period with Pennock getting a takedown with :12 left in the match to trail 12-10, but couldn’t get the pin before the final whistle.
Pennock would wipe out Ottumwa’s Daltin Doud in just :37, but then would suffer a pin at the hands of Washington’s Aaron Boone in the semifinals, sending him to consolation wrestling where he lost to New London’s Gage Burden by fall with two seconds left in the match. Pennock led 6-5 with a minute left in that match, but Burden would score a takedown and a near fall for four points and a 9-6 lead before securing the pin. Pennock would again beat Doud in his final match for 5^th place overall.
Cory Arnett was the only other Bloodhound to have a top 5 finish, taking fifth in the 285 lb. division. Arnett went 2-1 in pool wrestling Friday falling to Russel Coil of Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union with a pin in the third period. Cardinal’s Isaac Cox scored a 6-2 decision over Arnett in the opening round of Saturday wrestling. Cox would end up 4^th overall. Arnett downed AJ Wilson-Myles of Benton with a pin at 1:20 of the first period on the consolation side before falling to Zach Conlon of Dubuque Hempsted with a second period fall. The Hound junior would  knock off Vinnie Keller of Clear-Creek Amana in the second period in the fifth-place match.
The Hounds had four other wrestlers finish in the top 10 with Brody Bolandar (113 lbs.), Luke Vanderpool (120 lbs.), Rainer Johnson (150 lbs.), and Aaron Warner (215 lbs) all placing 10^th in their divisions.
The Bloodhounds were without state-ranked Ike Thacher, who wrestled Thursday against Mt. Pleasant, and Teague Smith, both out nursing injuries.
Keokuk was 20th overall with 62 points. Robert Howes led the way with a fourth-place finish at 126 lbs.
