Bradley E. Stanton, 73, of Nauvoo, Illinois, passed away at 4:00 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2024 at his home.
Brad was born October 13, 1951 in Kingstown, Rhode Island, the son of Mark and Mary (Hazard) Stanton. On November 10, 2007 he married Susan Lyons in Gila, New Mexico. She survives.
Brad was raised and educated in Rhode Island. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. During this time he flew in and out of Guantanemo Cuba, and played football for the Quantico Marine Devil Dogs. Later he worked as a North Atlantic Commercial Fisherman for 30 years. After his marriage, he and Susan moved to the Nauvoo area, where they are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Stanton was a member of the Narragansett Tribe, where he was a Silver Cloud Elder. He was proud to tell friends he was a direct descendant of Chief Massasoit. The Chief who met the Mayflower and provided protection for the Pilgrims. He attended Birkley School of Music in Boston and enjoyed playing stand-up bass with the Nauvoo Orchestra and earlier with his band played backup for Big Momma Thorton who wrote "Hound Dog". A kind and gentle man, he provided Sheltering for many in need in our area.
Besides his wife, Susan, survivors include two children: Jennifer Ah You and Damien Antkowiak; two grandchildren: Ted Ah You and Maya Diaz; four great-grandchildren: Winnie Ah You, McCoy Diaz, Sienna Diaz and Adeline Antkowiak and three sisters: Lorraine Keyes. Mary Ellen Stanton and Gayle Hazard.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Joanne Stanton and three brothers: Robert, Kevin and Anthony Stanton.
Cremation has been entrusted to Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Nauvoo.
