Schulz won't play politics - Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:
The interest shown in mayoral candidate positions in both Keokuk and Ft. Madison is very encouraging to me. I believe it is important that voters have a choice in picking their community leaders. New faces, ideas and backgrounds all should be carefully considered as elections do matter. The choices that voters make will determine the momentum and trajectory of each city government for the next 4 years.
I’ve seen a lot of support thrown behind a single candidate in the Ft. Madison race and have no doubt that she has the experience and knowledge to fill the roll. I, however, would like the voters of Ft. Madison to give careful consideration to Mr. Tom Schulz. I served with Tom on the Lee County Board of Supervisors (BOS) for several years. I know first-hand Tom’s unique ability to understand, analyze and offer real solutions to budgetary concerns. Ft. Madison and Keokuk will both need leaders to tackle budgetary shortfalls for the next several years.

Tom is very passionate about Ft. Madison and his actions prove it. During his time on the BOS he held community meetings to support the Newberry Center’s operations. Tom worked with other board members to make sure they understood the importance of this space in the community. Additionally, Tom voted to support the Labor Temple and its ability to maintain space above the Newberry Center. Tom did not “play politics” he did what he viewed was the right thing to do and in the best interest of the county budget as well. Tom has made trips to DesMoines and placed phone calls to state leaders on behalf of those he represents. In short, he is engaged and pro-active. If he does not know he contacts those who do; develops a plan and works to gain a coalition of the willing to implement the plan.
I’ve never known Tom to be anything but transparent. If you want to know where he stands all you have to do is ask him. He would be the first to tell you he is not perfect and may come off as “gruff” or “matter of fact”. Just know that his heart is with those he represents ….. all of them!!
