Seagers win third leg of LCAA OPEN

Eaves brothers take 2023 three-event title

The third and final Bass tournament in a three-event Lake Cooper Angling Association OPEN was held under the threat of rain and wind at Lake Sugema near Keosauqua last Sunday.  The water temperature was still very high adding to the “slow bite” forcing anglers to pull out all the stops in trying to tease bass into gulping down their presentation.

Without a doubt, the father son team of Scott and Mitch Seager of Ft. Madison “figured it out.”  Dragging a heavy bag of five fish - 20.45 lbs. was more than enough to grab the first-place finish.  Jigs and jump baits were the weapons used amongst’ the sunken tree stubs and limbs lining the west side of the lake. Team Seager also had a big bass at 6.11 lbs.

Second place found anglers Austin and Andy Bartholomew (Coralville – Keosauqua) nearly catching up to the Seagers with an 18.6 lbs.  Third place finishers were Fort Madison’s Kelly and Mary Jo Clark coming in at 18.27 lbs. Fourth place finish consisted of Jared Flockhart and Jeremy Smith (Keokuk – Kahoka) and weighed five fish at 15.86 lbs.

In addition, the brothers Jeff and Richie Eaves (Ft. Madison – Nauvoo) finished last Sundays’ tournament with enough points to earn the 2023 LCAA OPEN Championship.

The Lake Cooper Angling Association was established in 1986 to provide a recreational opportunity to those who wish to learn fishing as a sport and is open to those having an interest in participating in a catch and release format.  The club typically averages around 12 club only tournaments from April through September at locations which are usually within an hour’s drive.  With our unique ‘bump and dump’ format, we measure the caught fish in the boat at the point it was caught and immediately is released back into the same spot from which it came.  Measured and recorded on a ‘golf scorecard fashion”.

We are open to inspiring individuals to join;  male, female and even teens (with exceptions) are fishing with us.
