FORT MADISON - A shed was destroyed by fire Saturday night on the city's east side.
At 10:51 p.m., the Fort Madison Fire & Rescue Department was dispatched to 401 Avenue A for a report of a woodshed on fire. Units were enroute by 10:53 p.m. with two engines and a total of four personnel.
While enroute, Fort Madison Police Department units arrived on the scene and reported that the building was fully engulfed in flames. Less than a minute later, firefighters arrived on the scene. Captain Jay Blanchard established command and confirmed a fully involved structure fire with flames threatening the nearby house.
Command ordered Engine 9415 to secure a hydrant and lay a supply line to Engine 9411. The crew of Engine 9411 quickly deployed a pre-connected hose line to protect the house. Despite cold, damp weather causing some difficulty operating the hydrant, Engine 9415 successfully established a water supply. Crews then deployed one hose line to protect the house and two additional lines to extinguish the fire.
An “all-call” was issued for off-duty personnel to respond. Thanks to the swift action of FMFD crews, damage to the house was limited to minor siding damage and a couple of broken windows. Unfortunately, the woodworking shed was a total loss. The cause of the blaze was not released.
Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours, clearing the scene at 12:50 a.m.
Assisting at the scene was the Fort Madison Police Department.
There were no injuries reported.
