Smith, DiPrima take titles at FM Invite

FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds wrestlers got a little sweet and a little bitter Monday night at the Fort Madison Invitational.
The sweet was two first-place finishes from Mara Smith at 135 lbs. and Kat DiPrima at 140. The bitter came in the form of an injury to the left arm of Iris Arevalo that required an ambulance trip to the hospital.
The Bloodhounds finished 3^rd overall in the 18-team event with 165 points, behind Ottumwa’s 177 and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s 230. The Rockets had three title winners and five runners-up.
Fort Madison got a 3^rd-place finish from Aubree Bunnell at 145 lbs. Arevalo was wrestling for 3^rd place when she suffered the injury and finished 4^th overall at 120 lbs. McKayla Schinstock was also 4^th at 115 lbs.
Head Coach Kyle Doherty said the Lady Hounds are wrestling well and, despite not winning the tournament, he said 3^rd place is a good showing considering the Hounds went with just seven wrestlers in 14 brackets.
“Obviously you want to win your own tournament, but placing third with just seven wrestlers is pretty good I think,” he said after the event.
“Our girls are wrestling a lot better each time out. We’re seeing some positions we’ve struggled with that we’re handling a lot better and that makes me happy.”
He said Smith is wrestling at 135 but he would like to see her at 130.
“She’s starting to put together her offense which is something we’ve been on for a whole year about – making sure we’re being better offensively with the situations and she’s done a better job, but 135 has allowed her to do that.”
DiPrima has also been finding herself in the finals of a lot of tournaments early on.
“Mara and Kat are finding themselves there pretty consistently, which is good,” Doherty said.
“We’ve wrestled a lot and I really love this group of girls. They're really easy and they work so hard you don’t have to direct them in places. They want the same thing we want as a staff.”
Smith said she’s happy with her start.
“I think I’ll do good at 135 or 130. I don’t feel a big difference there,” she said. She said she doesn’t have a plan to cut but to keep wrestling until they allow two pounds over,” she said.
Smith has lost twice this year, each time to wrestlers who were at state last year. She said those matches she allowed herself to get into bad positions.
“I’m coming into things with the right mindset. We’ve wrestled a lot and that Bettendorf girl, that was a good match, but I felt a little tired from the wrestling in two tournaments previously,” she said.
DiPrima said she’s been wrestling well, but there’s room for improvement.
“I feel like that puts a little pressure on me, but I have to ignore that and just keep doing what I’m doing,” she said.
She said there are things she needs to clean up but still feels at a higher level than most of her opponents.
“I’m going over film and telling myself, here I should’ve done this instead of this and it’s a process of hammering those out and tuning up to January.”
