Tuesday thunderstorms spare most of county

LEE COUNTY – Regional weather officials are confirming two EF1 tornadoes descended out of the storm system that blew through the county Tuesday evening.
Both of those tornadoes were reported near Donnellson. A storm survey crew was in southeast Iowa on Wednesday analyzing damage to property. Crews have estimated that one tornado had maximum winds of 90 mph and another had 100 mph winds.
Lee County Emergency Management Agency Director Jason Dinwiddie said there was minimal damage in the county for two confirmed tornados.
“We didn’t see a lot of damage, we had a couple of farm buildings damaged and it did rip the roof off of the old John Deere Implement building across from Casey’s in Donnellson,” Dinwiddie said.
“It didn’t bring down trees or anything, but it did get up under and peel back that roof.”
Video footage shown on the Fort Madison Amtrak. Facebook page showed what appeared to be a wedge cloud over Fort Madison, but no rotation was confirmed on the ground at that time.
The storm rolled into the area about 9:15 p.m. with several severe weather alerts broadcast in and around the area. One hazardous materials event warning was determined to be an improper push at the Fort Madison fire department and no hazardous material incidents occurred as a result of the storm.
