FORT MADISON PUBLIC LIBRARY

Summer Reading is Here

Posted

Summer Reading registration begins Tuesday, May 27 and we have a lot of fun activities planned.  This year we are challenging everyone to “Level Up at the Library”.  While the obvious meaning seems to be games, there are many ways you can level up this summer.  Challenge yourself to learn a new skill or improve an existing one.  Set a goal to work on your physical or mental health.  Look around your community and find ways to level up the place you live.  Or, you can go with the obvious meaning and plan a game night with friends.
The library will be offering opportunities to Level Up in a variety of ways.  Level Up your reading by registering for our reading program and getting prizes for reaching different levels. There are three prizes levels for readers up to 18 years old, prizes include croc charms or a water game and we have board books and squishy toys for the littles readers.  They will also get a pass to the end of summer pool party as part of the first prize.  If you make it to the third prize and want to keep reading, we have a contest to see who can read the most minutes this summer with a dinosaur themed prize for the winner.  Older teens and adults can also participate, logging their reading for chances to win one of three prize baskets.  Log your reading on Beanstack or pick up a paper bookmark log.  Once you have read 5 hours, you can get one entry into the drawing for one of three prize baskets.  Complete up to 10 entries before August 1.  Each prize basket has a theme; Level Up Your Reading includes a book stand and a variety of bookmarks. Level Up Your Gaming includes two tabletop games as well as the basic gaming essentials of six-sided dice, pencils and notepads, or you can  Level Up Your Hobby with two diamond painting kits and a zipper tote of diamond painting tools.
For kids 12 and younger we have many in-person programs.  Story Hour for toddlers and pre-school age kids will continue through July 16.  On Mondays, we have a craft planned and will be doing things like making your own comic book, designing your own game board, making a foam Minecraft sword and making a paper squishy.  On Wednesdays, we will have a variety of different activities.  We’re bringing back Tie-Dye and the Foam Blaster.  There will also be a science show, Bingo and DIY Ice Cream Sundaes.
Minecraft will continue through July 15 for all ages on Tuesday afternoons.  Teens and adults are welcome to participate in long-term crafts during Thursday Crafternon.  We also have some additional activities planned for adults including a Paint and Sip evening on June 10 (please register in advance) and instruction in embroidering on paper on June 24.
Last, but definitely not least, we will have an escape room from June 5-7!  Evidence of Bigfoot has been spotted around the library and we need to find out if they have been able to get into the building afterhours.  Follow the clues to see if you can find evidence of Bigfoot inside the library.  Pre-registration is required.
A full schedule of activities can be picked up at the library or found at www.FortMadisonLibrary.org.
