Swanson wins weekend's Broken Anvil

WEST POINT – Andrew Swanson, of Machesney Park, Illinois was the winner of this weekend’s Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra race in West Point.
Swanson ran a total of 129.17 miles just one lap ahead of Nicole Morningstar who ran 125 miles. Swanson made 31 laps in 31 hours around the 4.167 mile loop through South Park and Pollmiller Park Saturday and Sunday as part of the Ultra running event. Morningstar ran 30 laps in 30 hours.
Runners completed the laps within an hour and then continued to run laps every hour on the hour. It was the sixth year organizer Nic Chiri put on the event.
Stormy Hild of Athens Illinois was third with 116.67 miles, Wayne Ross of West Des Moines came in 4th with 108.33 miles and Gabe Hiatt of West Des Moines was fifth 104.17 miles.
The top local finisher was Lisa Lake of Wever who ran 91.67 miles which converts to 22 hours/22 laps, good enough for a tie for 9th overall.
Fort Madison’s Justin Cain finished 12 laps or 50 miles for 37th overall, while Wes Holtkamp ran 10 laps over 41.67 miles and finished in a four-way tie for 48th place. Fort Madison’s Wendy Boeding finished 57th along with 13 others including Nathan Koser of Weste Point with 33.33 miles or 8 laps/hours. West Point’s Brian Tripp ran 7 hours for 29.17 miles. Kaiden Humes of Donnellson ran five hours or 20.83 miles as did Sawyer’s Drew Weisinger, and Donnellson’s Rhonda Lowenberg.
Megan Rempe and Melissa Pieper of Fort Madison, and Amanda Schinstock each ran three laps for 12.5 miles. Bobby Holtkamp did two hours, while Tara Chiri and Matt Mohrfeld each ran the opening four-mile lap.
Rain and thunderstorms rattled the remaining field early into Sunday morning, but nine still pressed on through the precipitation and wind.

FORT MADISON – Central Lee went 0-3 at the Holy Trinity Classic Monday night in Fort Madison. The Hawks went down 1-15 in a two-set tiebreaker with Mediapolis 8-21, 21-17, 1-15. They also too a game from Columbus before falling 15-21, 22-20, 17-19 in tough loss. They also went three sets with Danville 10-21, 21-15, 15-17.
Brylee Cook had 22 kills, 18 assists, was 21 for 21 serving, with 15 digs, and three blocks. Maggie Mullins had seven kills and couple blocks up front. Madison Frueh had 11 kills and 27 assists working the ball around for the Lady Hawks. Carly Broadwell had five blocks and Kaylee Moeller had seven kills and seven blocks. Addy Dill was 19-19 serving with 12 digs. Macie Doty was 24-24 serving with 13 digs.
