KEOSAUQUA – The Holy Trinity Catholic boys had a juggernaut of sorts Tuesday night in a route of Van Buren in Keosauqua.
The Crusaders got 23 points from Luke Hellige, Koby Jones, and Layne Rung, who seems to be heating up at just the right time for Holy Trinity.
Rung had 24 in Saturday’s win over Fort Madison in the Hound Dome and 16 in HTC’s 66-60 win over Class 2A No. 6 West Burlington on Friday, giving him 63 points over the last three games for a 21-point average.
Hellige is one of the state’s most prolific scorers averaging right at 25 points per game, putting him in the top 10 in the state and top five in Class 1A.
Holy Trinity opened up a small 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed that lead to 11 at the half. Jones had 12 in the first half. Hellige had 10 including two 3-pointers. Rung had 14 in the first half 12 on 3-balls.
Van Buren managed just 8 points in the third period, while the Crusaders went on a 24-8 run to set the tone for the rest of the game.
The win moves HTC to 9-2 overall which is tied for second in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South standings. They are tied with Burlington Notre Dame and HTC owns a win over the Nikes. Both squads are 12-2. That numerical tie will be broken Friday as the Nikes come to Shottenkirk Gymnasium in Fort Madison.
West Burlington leads the conference at 11-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of the Crusaders.
