FORT MADISON - Reilynn Turnbull was ready to finally get to play.
It was quite the start for the Fort Madison junior midfielder.
Turnbull scored four goals, two in the first 4 ½ minutes, as the Bloodhounds opened the season with a 6-1 win over Washington on Thursday at the Baxter Sports Complex.
It was a delayed start to the season for Fort Madison — last Thursday’s scheduled opener against Notre Dame-West Burlington was postponed because of weather.
“I've been waiting for the start of the season for so long,” Turnbull said. “I've been ready since the end of last season (a 1-0 loss to Burlington in a Class 4A regional semifinal), I was mad about how we went out, and I was just ready to be back.”
Turnbull had five goals for the Bloodhounds last season, and she came close to matching that in just one match. Her first goal came just 2:52 into the match, and 2:46 later she had her second one.
“That was great,” Turnbull said of the start. “It brought up the energy, brought up everybody’s spirits, got everyone hyped up.”
“I think everyone was ready to just get going,” Fort Madison coach Carrie Burken said. “You can only practice for so long before you just want games to happen. I think we were ready to go.”

Burken liked the way her team responded throughout the match, including after giving up the Demons’ lone goal just 28 seconds into the second half.
“We didn’t give up too many goals last season,” said Burken, whose team surrendered just 14 goals in 18 matches last season. “I think giving up the goal was important from the standpoint of, ‘How do we respond to that? To give up a goal, even being up giving up a goal really quick in the second half, could have been very discouraging and led to giving up more goals, but I think our team responded well by just realizing what adjustments needed to be made, and then they made those adjustments defensively.”
“We knew it was only one goal,” Turnbull said. “It didn’t really hurt us too bad.”
Hadley Wolfe, whose first goal came with three minutes left in the first half, got her second goal with 7:03 to play. Turnbull’s goal with 5:19 left closed the scoring.
Halle Menke and Emma Snaadt each had two assists for the Bloodhounds, while Wolfe had one. Goalkeeper Ellie Hellman had four saves.
Burken liked how the Bloodhounds played defensively, given some of the new faces at the back end.
“For a lot of people, playing in a lot of different positions and a lot of different combinations, it's just going to take time,” Burken said. “Macyn Lampe is a freshman — she hasn't played defense since sixth grade. It's not her natural position, but she's being thrown in there. Morgan (Brooks) got thrown into defense. She's normally a forward, but we asked her to play back there to help out. Charley (Huebner) hasn't played center back before she was playing outside back last year. So it's just a lot of different combinations, a lot of different people, and it just takes time to figure out positioning defensively and where you have to be to make the team most successful.”
The match was also the opener for Southeast Conference play for the Bloodhounds, who finished second in the conference last season, one game behind champion Burlington. The two teams play next Thursday at Burlington, the conclusion of a three-match week for the Bloodhounds, who play Monday at Keokuk and Tuesday at Central Lee.
“We’re going to get a full taste of everything next week,” Burken said. “So it was good to get the first one out of the way.”
