BURLINGTON — Central Lee’s boys golf team had high hopes for the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet on Wednesday.
The third-place finish was something the Hawks didn’t want.
Central Lee finished the day with a 337 team score. Mediapolis won the team title with a 322, while Winfield-Mount Union was second with a 332.
“There’s a little bit of disappointment,” Central Lee coach Mike Ungerer said. “I feel bad for the kids, because some of them didn’t play up to their expectations.”
The Hawks have won team titles in five multi-team events this season and were the defending champion in this tournament, but struggled on a Flint Hills Golf Course that proved to be difficult.
“It played a little different than when we played here before, because they had some different pin placements,” Ungerer said.
Mylan Lowenberg finished fourth individually to earn first-team all-conference honors, shooting a 78. Carson Morrison tied for eighth with an 82 to receive second-team all-conference honors.
Carter Jones shot an 88 for honorable mention honors, Caleb Larson had an 89. Kaden Swan had a 91.
“They’re pretty down,” Ungerer said. “They’re really disappointed. They had high expectations for the day. But I told them, we’ve got other meets.”
Holy Trinity finished ninth in the team standings with a 363.
“That’s a good score in tough conditions,” Crusaders coach John Goetz said. “The course was tough — they had the tees back and the pins were in difficult positions. But, the kids played well.
“We got better as the day went on. We didn’t start out too good, but we got better as the day went on. It’s a sign these guys are mentally tough.”
Brock Scheetz, who shot an 87, was an all-conference honorable mention, as was Max Kruse with an 88.
“I’m really happy for those guys because they played well,” Goetz said.
Nathan Box shot a 93 for the Crusaders. Jameson Denning and Zane Houtz each had a 95. Blake Mohrfeld carded a 100.
Rowan Miller of Hillcrest Academy was medalist with a 75. Mediapolis’ Ephram Hallgren and Winfield-Mount Union’s Konnor Kinneberg tied for second with a 77.
Central Lee will close the regular season by hosting its own invitational on Saturday with a field that includes Holy Trinity. Then both teams begin sectional play next Wednesday — Central Lee plays in the Class 2A meet at Tipton, while Holy Trinity plays in the 1A meet in Winfield.
“This is something they can learn from, and hopefully they can do better in the next meet,” Ungerer said. “Hopefully we can put it behind them and get ready for the next challenge.”
“It’s excellent preparation, because the teams in the sectional are basically the teams we played today,” Goetz said. “So we know what to do.”
