BURLINGTON — Fort Madison’s girls soccer team showed its versatile offense in Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Notre Dame-West Burlington at Tackleson Field.
The 14th-ranked (Class 2A) Bloodhounds (12-1-1) got two goals from Reilynn Turnbull and one each from Halle Menke, Kara Lake and Chloe Butler to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 matches.
Hadley Wolfe leads Class 2A in scoring with 38 goals. But Lake got her 12th goal of the season, Turnbull now has 11 goals, Menke has six and Butler has four.
“I think it shows teams that, if you’re going to man-mark Hadley, we’ve got other people who can score,” coach Carrie Burken said. “We’re not a one-scorer team. We have a bunch of scorers, and that’s good for our confidence. We know that anyone can score at any point, people can come off the bench and score, people can rotate to different positions and score. We’re a pretty adaptable team, and that’s good going into the postseason, because you never know what’s going to happen.”
This match marked the start of the final week of the regular season for the Bloodhounds, who play host to No. 13 (Class 3A) Iowa City West on Friday before opening regional play on May 29 at home against Keokuk.
“I think it gives us a look at a really good team (in Iowa City West), and we saw a good team tonight,” Burken said. “For me, it gives us a chance to work on some details, to be challenged by a good team. And I think that’s good going into the postseason.
