Winter reading program underway at FM Library

Anyone ages 7 and up can participate in reading incentive

The Fort Madison Public Library’s winter reading program theme is “Where We Come From” inspired by the picture book by Diane Wilson, Sun Yung Shin, Shannon Gibney and John Coy, illustrated by Dion MBD.
“Where We Come From” explores the heritage of the four diverse authors through a powerful poetic text and richly layered illustrations.
This program will take place from January 1 through February 29, is open to anyone age 7 and older, and will be focusing on local and family history and stories.  To participate in the reading portion of the program, you can sign up at fortmadison.beanstack.org or pick up a reading tracker bookmark at the library.  When you sign-up you will get a three-ring binder with some family history and story collection resources.  Read 300 minutes and get a reading log bookmark as well as a chance to win a family history scrapbooking basket.  Earn additional chances to win the prize basket when you reach the goal of reading a total of 600 and 900 minutes.  If you are using the beanstack reading app there are also optional activities and prompts for telling yours and your families stories.
We are also planning two programs, one in January and one in February.  On Tuesday, January 23 from 3:30 to 7:30, we will have the “Where We Come From: Fort Madison Puzzle Room”.  There will be puzzle stations set up in the Sheaffer Meeting room with connections to Fort Madison’s history.  Solve the puzzles to earn stickers for your Fort Madison passport and learn about the people who have shaped our community.  There are no assigned times for this activity but we would appreciate pre-registration so we know about how many people to plan for.
In February we will have a genealogy workshop Friday and Saturday, the 9th and 10th from 10 am to 1pm each day.  There will be time for general genealogy research with assistance both days.  Friday will have a class on resources available at the Library with instruction on how to use them.  Saturday will start with a class on how to use bullet journaling to organize your family research, followed by time to use the library’s resources with assistance available.
Community Calendar
We have begun adding community events to the online library calendar at https://fortmadison.librarycalendar.com.  Events are added to the calendar as they are submitted by community organizations using the form found here https://tinyurl.com/547jam3h.  Does your group have an upcoming community event?  Let us know by submitting it through the form.  Most community events open to the public are eligible for inclusion in the community calendar.
