Mary Therese “Trix” Standefer, 77 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 8:50 pm Monday, November 13, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. She was born April 1, 1940 at Emmetsburg, Iowa, a daughter of Walter J and Catherine J (Molloy) Higgins. On August 31, 1963 she married John Hoadley Standefer Sr. in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death.
Mary was a 1958 graduate of Emmetsburg Catholic High School, Emmetsburg. She earned her nursing degree from Mercy Nursing School in Des Moines. She worked as an Registered Nurse in the OR and family practice for more than 40 years. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Altar and Rosary Society, and The Prayer Shawl Ministry. Using her seamstress, cooking, and baking talents she was an active volunteer all her life. Anyone who knew Mary as a nurse, volunteer, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, or friend loved her dearly.
She is survived by one daughter, Jeanie (Alan) Schmoldt of Oakwood Hills, Illinois; three sons: John H Jr. (wife Stef) Standefer of Bartlett, Illinois; Jack J (wife Betsy) Standefer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and James W (wife Noreen) Standefer of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; two brothers, Bill (Linda) Higgins of Toledo, Ohio and Joe (Brenda) Higgins of Longview, Texas; two sisters, Ann (Ed) Ruddy of Ottumwa, Iowa and Rita (Ted) Schneider of Wever, Iowa; 10 grandchildren: Jasmine, Jade, Savannah, Aaron, Nicholas, Joshua, Caelum, Kieran, Charleston, and Ryker; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. Visitation will follow. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 6:00 pm Thursday evening at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 am Friday, November 17, 2017 at Ss. Mary and Joseph’s Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Fort Madison with Reverend Mark Spring. Burial will be Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa. A memorial has been established for Holy Family Parish, contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel or the church.
