FORT MADISON – The Holy Trinity Crusaders got five three-pointers from senior Taylor Boeding in the second half, but couldn’t catch up to Central Lee, falling 50-46 Friday night at home.
Boeding, who finished with six three pointers on the night, led HTC with 18 points and was the only player in double figures for the Crusaders. Senior Emily Box had nine points, while Mya Lawlor added seven. Ashlynn Haas and Claire Pothitakis each had five points and each connected on a three pointer. Senior Eryn Anderson connected on a couple of free throws for two points on the night.
The Crusaders couldn’t get much offense going in the first half with nine points in the first quarter and seven in the second as Central Lee rolled out to a 27-16 first half lead. Sophomore Mya Merschman put eight in the first half for the Lady Hawks. Merschman would finish with 21 points on the night including 10-of-14 from the free throw line, Ten of those free throws came in the second half.
HTC came out cool in the opening minutes of the third period but went on a 14-7 run sparked by 12 from Boeding who got hot from long distance on the wings and HTC closed the gap to seven 30-37 at the end of the third period.
The girls would get as close as three at 39-42 with three minutes left in the game, but the Lady Hawks would stretch the lead to five at 46-41 with a minute left.
The loss comes in HTC’s first game after the holiday break. The Crusaders ended the first half of the season with a 61-27 win over Cardinal of Eldon back on Dec. 21. Box dominated inside against the Comets with 26 points, including 13 of 22 from the field. Anderson had 13 in the game where HTC led from start to finish rushing out to a 22-2 first quarter lead. Box also led HTC with 16 rebounds and Anderson had 10.
The Crusaders move to 6-5 on the year and play host to Mt. Pleasant on Monday at home in a junior varsity/varsity girls matchup beginning at 6 p.m. Danville comes to town on Tuesday for a boys/girls varsity double header.
