Barr Memorial Chapel obituary – Curtis Leon Bernand I, 74, Fort Madison


Curtis Leon Bernand I, 74 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 6:46 pm Saturday, August 10, 2019 at his home.  He was born December 13, 1944 in Moberly, Missouri, a son of Roland and Cecelia (Bledsoe) Bernand.  He first married Donna Kay Bernand.  They later divorced.  On June 11, 2004, he married Sandra Kay “Sandy” Hitchcock.  She survives.


Curt was a graduate of Colona High School, Colona, Illinois and later attended Southeastern Community College, West Burlington.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, and served during the Vietnam War.  He worked for Fox Appliance and General Electric in Burlington, Iowa.  He was a member of the NRA and a former member of the Moose Lodge.  He enjoyed fishing and golfing when he was younger.  He was an avid fan of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, and the Minnesota Vikings. 

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Bernand, of Fort Madison; six sons: Timothy (Nancy) Springsteen of Vandalia, Illinois; William Cochenour of Fort Madison; Scott Cochenour of Fort Madison; Curtis Bernand II of Burlington; Marty Cochenour of Fort Madison; and Curry Bernand of Burlington; four daughters: Jenny Springsteen of Burlington; Trudy (Steve) Whaley of Pekin, Illinois; Chris (Jeremy) Stroda of Faifield, Iowa; and Cecilia Bernand of Moline, Illinois; one brother, Bryan Edmunds of Colona; one sister, Deanna Edmunds of Colona; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and best friends, Fred Sly and Diane Stiles.  He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Donna, two brothers, Bill Bernand and Gary Edmunds, and one daughter, Delores Bernand.

His family will greet friends from 10:00 – 11:00 am Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, followed by full military rites at 11:00 am Wednesday at the funeral home.  His cremated remains will be place at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington.  A memorial has been established for his family c/o of his wife, Sandy.  Contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.  Online condolences to his family may be made at
