FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds basketball team wrapped up their regular season with an exciting 49-42 overtime win over Burlington at home.
The Hounds’ roller coaster regular season came to a close with a sweep of the Burlington Grayhounds. Fort Madison knocked off the visitors by 18 three weeks ago.
Freshman Camille Kruse and senior Brandy Walker got the inside/outside game going and combined for 35 points in the win.
Fort Madison erased a 24-16 Burlington lead in the first half and came out of the locker room outscoring the Grayhounds 18-7 to take a 34-31 lead into the final period.
Burlington would retake the lead with four minutes left in the game at 37-36. The frenzied final minutes saw only two points from each team with Burlington holding a 39-38 lead.
The Hounds would convert on a bucket and a foul in a 3-point play in the final seconds to get to the tie at 41 after Burlington converted a bucket.
In the extended session, Fort Madison would jump out to a quick start with two buckets and then reeled off five straight free throws, all while holding Burlington to just one point for the win.
Kruse finished with 18, Walker had 17, Nadia Boeding added seven points, while Molly Knipe added four all in the critical fourth period. Anna Kester had three to round out the Bloodhound scoring.
On Thursday, the Hounds rolled over Albia at home 68-25. Anna Kester led Fort Madison, who held a 29-6 halftime lead, with 12 points. Three other players scored in double figures with Walker at 11, and Nadia Boeding and Camille Kruse each with 10. Isabella Boeding had seven, Kylee Cashman and McKenna Cashman both had six, while Dalyn Wondra chipped in with four.
Fort Madison finished the regular season a much improved 9-13 winning four of their last five heading into district regionals next week The Hounds travel to Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday night to open Region 5 action against the Panthers.
