FORT MADISON – Austin Miller saved one of his better outings of the year for the Southeast Conference cross country run Thursday night in Washington.
The junior just missed cutting the 17-minute mark chasing Washington’s Lance Sobaski around the 5K at Washington Country Club.
Miller finished at 17:04.59, 10 seconds of the pace set by Sobaski at 16:54.15.
Will Gager, another junior on the Fort Madison squad, finished 3rd with a time of 17:25.40. Anthony Barnes and Hayden Wolfe were the other scoring runners for the Bloodhounds. Barnes took 9th place overall at 17:57.81, while, Wolfe came in 14th at 18:19.61.
The Hounds totaled 45 points good enough for first place ahead of Burlington with 47 points.
For the girls, Paetyn Wiegand captured 4th place with a time of 21:32.22 to help lead the Lady Hounds to a 3rd-place finish with 67 points. Mt. Pleasant’s Abby Blint led the field with a 20:23.21.
Jordyn Burch finished 9th for Fort Madison with a time of 22:30.05. Other scoring runners for the Bloodhounds were Raquel Schneider 23:04.13 (13th), Ellie Schulte 23:57.75 (19th), and Maddie Rashid 24:54.56 (22nd).
In the junior high two miles runs, Avery Rump took 2nd place overall at 12:18.91, 13 seconds of the pace of Mt. Pleasant’s Abigail Carthey. Addison Rump was 12th overall with a time of 13:18.51. Rounding out the top five for Fort Madison were Allison Lamb (15th), Ellie Huebner (17th), and Hailey Kemkper (18th).
The girls took third place overall with 63 points..
For the boys Little Hounds, Payton Lambert took 3rd place in scoring with a 11:59.88 and Jake Haessig, was 11th with 12:26.32. The remaining top five for Fort Madison were Calvin Johnson (12th), Nolan Guzman (13th), and Jacob Shottenkirk (19th).
The boys finished 2nd overall with 58 points.
