WEST POINT - Medical records of a missing West Point man were used to make a positive identification on human remains that were found north of West Point on Sept. 5 and Sept. 12.

Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber confirmed Thursday that the remains found near 110th Street off of X23 in northern Lee County were that of Darren Bunnell, 54, of West Point.

Bunnell's obituary appears in today's E-edition and at www.pencitycurrent.com

Authorities with West Point Police, West Point Fire & Rescue, Lee County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, and Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations had conducted several searches since Bunnell's disappearance on June 14th.

He was last seen on that day walking north of West Point by a postal carrier.

Weber said DNA evidence confirming the identity hasn't yet been received, but medical records correlating to a procedure confirmed the identity.

Officials said they do not believe there was foul play associated with the incident and said there is no danger to the general public.

The partial remains were located on property several miles north of West Point on Sunday, Sept. 5. The owners of the property continued to search the area, with the assistance of law enforcement and independently, and found the additional remains on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Bunnell was originally from Oskaloosa, but was living in West Point at the time of his disappearance.
