Finding YOUR Fort Madison

A Fair to Remember in Lee County

Posted

Growing up in Donnellson, the Lee County Fair was the highlight of my summer and I still look forward to it. As Iowa’s oldest county fair, it holds that perfect mix of tradition, excitement, and good old-fashioned fun.
I spent my childhood helping friends clean their livestock stalls, riding the carnival rides all day, and living off lemonade shake-ups, corn dogs, and funnel cakes. We’d bet quarters on demolition derby winners, cheer on 4-H entries in the Art Hall, and pick our favorite queen contestant to root for.
This year, I’ll be back — not just for the memories, but to help promote the incredible events happening all week long. Join me Friday from 1–4pm for Kids Day at the tourism booth. I’ll be there with Keokuk Tourism sharing family-friendly adventures across Lee County. Then on Saturday, I return in an unofficial but highly enjoyable role — as a judge for the wine competition.

So grab your friends, support the exhibitors, catch a grandstand show, and stay for the various food events. Whether you’re five or ninety-five, there’s something for everyone.
Don’t just attend the fair — be part of it. And don't forget to grab a funnel cake!
