GRHS hosts first-ever teddy bear clinic

Youth learn about health care with stuffed animals

WEST BURLINGTON - Great River Health successfully hosted its first Teddy Bear Clinic on Monday, March 30th, welcoming children and families for a hands‑on, child‑friendly introduction to healthcare. The event was designed to help young children feel more comfortable in medical settings by allowing them to explore the hospital, meet providers, and practice pretend medical skills using their favorite stuffed animals.
The Teddy Bear Clinic was developed through Great River Health’s partnership with A.T. Still University, whose medical students complete their third‑ and fourth‑year clinical training within the health system. Hospitalist Dr. Vijaya‑Rangan and Physician Liaison Kailey Gibbs oversee the students’ rotations, educational sessions, and clinical experiences throughout their time at Great River Health.
Gibbs was inspired by the University of Iowa’s program. As a young mother, she immediately recognized the value of a child‑centered initiative that could benefit families locally. Her enthusiasm helped spark what organizers hope will become a signature annual outreach and education event.
“Seeing how excited kids were to explore the hospital and care for their stuffed animals was incredibly rewarding,” said Gibbs. “I’m thrilled about how this first event turned out, and I’m excited to see it grow even more in the future.”
During the clinic, children rotated through interactive stations led by Great River Health providers and A.T. Still medical students. By focusing on stuffed animals, children were able to learn about medical tools and procedures in a playful, low‑pressure environment.
Organizers expressed appreciation for the strong support from Great River Health administration and community partners, particularly Tasha Prickett and Dianne Petersen from KidZone, and Amber Springsteen and Deb Ritters from the West Burlington
Community School District, and the many Great River Health providers who volunteered their time to make the event a success.
