Posted

KEOKUK - On November 14th, 2024 our police department was contacted by a law enforcement agency outside of our jurisdiction in reference to assisting an active investigation that led them to the City of Keokuk.
Through this investigation, it was determined that an adult male, Nicholas Wayne Burgess, solicited who he reasonably believed to be an underage female for a sexual relationship via the internet. Burgess arranged to meet who he believed to be a 15-year-old female at a pre-determined location in Keokuk for this purpose. When Burgess arrived at this pre-determined location, he was placed under arrest.
Nicholas Wayne Burgess, 40, of Hamilton, Il is charged with Enticing A Minor-Under 16, a Class D Felony. Burgess was also charged with Possession of Methamphetamine-2nd Offense, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor. The Lee County Narcotics Task Force filed the drug charges. Burgess was transported to the Lee County Jail to await an initial court appearance.
An arrest is merely an accusation supported by probable cause. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in the court of law.
The successful outcome of this investigation was a result of multiple law enforcement agencies working in collaboration. The Lee County Narcotics Task Force, Ft. Madison Police Department, LeeComm Dispatch Center, and the original investigating agency from another jurisdiction contributed resources to this investigation.
We encourage the public to contact our police department with any additional information regarding this event. The community plays a large role in helping our department suppress crime and keep our community safe.
