FORT MADISON - The North Lee County Historical Society will have its annual Trick or Treat Night at the Historic Lee County Jail, 711 Avenue F, from 5-7 p.m. Thursday October 31.
This is also the time of the Fort Madison, Donnellson, City wide Trick-or-Treat.
The jail opened in May 1867 and was used until 1977 when a new Lee County Jail was opened.
The Historical Society made a big effort to save the building from demolition and in 2001 leased the jail from the county and has funded the preservation of the jail. Each year the Society opens up the jail for tours during the Halloween celebration giving out candy and tells of the building history.
As in previous years the volunteers will be handing out Tootsie Rolls in memory of longtime Lee County Sheriff, Harold R. “Toots” Delahoyde who served from 1952 to 1966.
