FORT MADISON - Nico Merschman is back with two community-led fundraisers for us to get involved in.
The next “Silent Scream: Music for Mental Health” is coming up soon on October 10, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.. Last year, this fundraiser raised over $2,000 for Elevate Assertive Community Treatment and Mobile Crisis programs. All of the proceeds will go to the same amazing nonprofit that often goes unseen.
“I think it’s extremely important to remind people that they’re not alone fighting their battles with their mental health, and there are so many people that care about them and are here fighting for them,” Merschman said.
This year Silent Scream will have two returning bands: Little Evil and Inside the Bullet (named ShadesInBlue at last year’s fundraiser). There will be two new bands featured at this year’s fundraiser, Cherry Sundae and Mirror Effect.
Tickets for the fundraiser on October 10 are $15, and 100% of that goes to Elevate. The event will take place at the Lee County Economic Development Group building in Montrose, Iowa. There will be resources and a silent auction.
Merschman is also bringing back the community coat drive through the Burlington-based nonprofit, Code Red. Code Red’s main mission is to fight period poverty. The organization saw there was a need for coats in their community and strives to meet people’s needs. Merschman helped them with a couple of events and helped them with their coat drive last year.
“I was inspired to try and do the same thing in my home community. [Code Red] helped me run a coat distribution in Fort Madison at the Eagles last year. We were able to give 90+ coats to people who need them along with other winterwear,” she said.
The Fort Madison drop-off locations for this year’s coat drive include Avenue O Laundry, The Broom Closet, Riverside Resale Shop, Tena’s Tap II, and Fort Madison Public Library. The collection runs through October 16; drop off your coats today. Distribution will be on November 15. Nicole Merschman continues to not shy away from community involvement; maybe this is your sign.
