FORT MADISON – Lee County Conservation District’s director Heather Huebner now has another hat to wear.
Huebner was appointed to the Fort Madison Community School District Board of Directors Wednesday night in a third ballot vote by current board members. She was appointed over retired district teacher Rachella Dravis, and Chad Savage of Denmark.
“I am really excited and humbled to have the honor to serve the school board, even it is only for the next four months,” Huebner said. “I look forward to gaining insight and serving the families, teachers and students, and FMCSD.”
Dravis received an endorsement from the Fort Madison Education Association out of a forum Monday night at the public library.
Following a presentation at the beginning of the meeting from the candidates, the board went into its regular session, but then put the nomination later in the agenda.
At that point, board member Mio Santiago nominated all three candidates to be considered for appointment and that was seconded by Paul Wilkerson. Ballots were then distributed and Santiago and Wilkerson voted for Huebner, while Brad Menke and Josh Wykert voted for Savage. Board member Kelly Nelton voted for Dravis.
Santiago then motioned to appoint Huebner and the motion passed unanimously. Huebner was then administered the oath of office. She will hold the position until the next general election in November.
The seats of Menke, Santiago, and Wilkerson will also be up for re-election in the November general election. With Huebner in the mix, the general election for Fort Madison school board would constitute a quorum election.
In other action, the board:
• approved the 2025-25 certified handbooks for the elementary and Junior/Senior High School.
• approved a proposal from Nolte, Cornman, and Johnson for the district’s financial audits for 2025-2027. Nelton voted against the proposal.
