On November 9th, 2024 at approximately 7:20am, our police department received a report of a possible stabbing that had taken place earlier that morning in Keokuk.
Officers made contact with a potential witness, Shayla Johnson, 30 of Keokuk. Johnson initially stated that she had been called by her boyfriend, who is also the victim, Zachary Vizcaya, 30 of Keokuk, to be picked up. When she arrived, she noted that Vizcaya was bleeding from the area of his midsection. Johnson transported Vizcaya to a medical facility without contacting medical services.
The preliminary information received by Officers stated that the incident took place somewhere on S 7th Street and that the victim was picked up by Johnson, near Bank Street and Kilbourne Park. Officers searched both areas for evidence supporting this claim but did not find any. Officers went to the area of the shared residence of Vizcaya and Johnson where they noted blood evidence on the sidewalk. That scene was secured by the Keokuk Police Department.
Through further investigation, Officers determined that an altercation took place inside of the shared residence of Johnson and Vizcaya. During this altercation, Vizcaya allegedly assaulted Johnson, impeding her airflow. Johnson later armed herself with a knife and allegedly stabbed Vizcaya in the midsection. There is evidence to support that the stabbing was retaliatory.
A search warrant was applied for and received for 128 Timea Street in Keokuk. A thorough search of that residence was completed and items supporting the charges were discovered and seized by the Keokuk Police Department.
Zachary Vizcaya, 30 of Keokuk, was arrested on November 10, 2024 for Domestic Assault-Impeding Airflow, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was transported to jail to await an initial appearance.
Shayla Johnson, 30, of Keokuk, was arrested on November 10, 2024 for Willful Injury, a class D felony. She was transported to jail to await an initial appearance.
An arrest is merely an accusation supported by probable cause. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in the court of law.
