NLCHS opening historic jail for trick or treaters

Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at old Lee County Jail

FORT MADISON - The North Lee County Historical Society will be opening the Old Lee County Jail at 711 Avenue F for the Halloween, “Trick or Treat” night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on October 31.

Members and volunteers of the Society will be hosts and open up the entire old jail for the children and others that want to tour the 155- year old facility that opened in May 1867.

            It was a longtime tradition of Lee County Sheriff Harold R. “Toots” Delahoyde to offer “Tootsie Rolls” at the jail for this occasion and the Society is continuing the tradition as they have for several years since taking over the lease on the jail.

Kathy Burkhardt, president of the Society announced the museum in the Historic AT&SF Depot  is open 360 days a year from 10am-4pm Monday thru Saturday and noon-4 pm on Sunday. The 1895 CB&Q Depot is open many days where mostly transportation related item are displayed. /Visit us on-line as we share hundreds of historic photos on the North Lee County Historical Society Facebook page. The museum also assists tourist with tourist information and genealogical research. The North Lee County Historical Society is always in need of volunteers and accepts donations to keep the maintenance, insurance and utility bills paid on the six buildings they responsible for maintaining and raising funds to develop the War of 1812 Battlefield into a memorial park to honor the soldiers that gave their lives defending our country 1808-1813.

The next public monthly meeting of the Society will be held Tuesday, November 8 at 5:30 pm in the Historic CB&Q Depot. Any area resident interested in preserving our history or tourism is welcome to attend

Donations for the preservation of the jail or other projects being undertaken by the Society may be dropped by the museum or mailed to NLCHS, PO Box 285, Fort Madison, Iowa, 52627.
