FORT MADISON – A truck fell off an overpass over Bluff Road this morning sending one victim to the hospital.
Fort Madison firefighters and Lee County EMS responded to the accident following a 911 call at approximately 8:51:48 a.m. The truck had gone over the bridge at Highway 61 and Bluff Road.
According to a release from the fire department, the call was initially reported via 911 from a cell phone with location updates provided by LeeComm. Due to the location of the accident and the potential severity where the need for immediate emergency care is critical in life-saving efforts, Fort Madison Fire responded with two engines and seven personnel.
“Our priority is always the safety and well-being of the community,” said Lieutenant and Incoming Fire Chief Chad Hannum. “In emergency situations where time is a critical factor, our personnel will always act in the best interest of those in need.”
Upon arrival at 08:56:29 a.m. Fort Madison fire crews found the truck rolled over with one occupant trapped inside. Captain Mike Schneider established Fort Madison command and fire personnel, along with Lee County Emergency Medical Services, worked quickly to assess the scene and provide aid to the driver. The patient was extricated and transported to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center – Fort Madison for treatment.
Due to the nature of the crash, the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Lee County Engineer’s Office were notified to assess the structural integrity of the overpass. Traffic in the area was temporarily impacted while crews worked to clear the scene. Fort Madison Fire crews cleared the scene at 09:39:49. By 9:41 AM, the roadway was reopened to normal traffic.
The Fort Madison Fire Department would like to thank all responding agencies, including Montrose Fire, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and EMS personnel, for their coordination and swift action.
