Two hurt in Tuesday bicycle accident

One youth airlifted to Iowa City following collision

FORT MADISON - Two youth were injured Tuesday afternoon when their bicycle struck a vehicle at the intersection of 20th Street and Avenue E.
The two youth ages nine and 12 were riding on the same bicycle southbound on 20th Street when it entered the intersection and struck the driver's side of an east bound 2020 Honday Civic driven by a 19-year-old female who was not identified in the police release.
Fort Madison fire crews arrived at 4:44 p.m. and confirmed there were two patients. Command was established by FMFD’s Captain Gathers who coordinated operations while fire crews provided patient care in conjunction with Lee County EMS.
"This was a difficult scene involving young patients, and we appreciate the teamwork and coordinated response from all agencies involved," said FMFD Chief Chad Hannum.
LeeComm dispatched first responders to the scene at 4:44 p.m.
One male was transferred to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison, and the other was airlifted to Iowa City by MedForce helicopter via Fort Madison Airport. The female was uninjured.
All names have been withheld pending the investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
Fort Madison Police Chief Cody Potthast said due to the nature of the injuries, Iowa State Patrol was contacted to conduct a full scene evaluation.
FMPD would like to thank all of those that assisted in the accident, including the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Ambulance Service, Iowa State Patrol, AirEvac and Fort Madison Public Works and Dunkins Towing.
No further information will be released to protect the privacy of those involved.
