Dear Editor:
I have long had concerns with the former Republican Party regarding substantive policy issues, but this current manifestation is deeply troubling. I have questions for both the party and its supporters. Given the USA's self-image as a beacon of liberty and justice, why is justice so elusive? What is wrong with ensuring equal voting access for all citizens? Why is there such anger among your electorate? Why do your policies often seem cruel, such as taking food away from children? What’s behind actions like cutting SNAP and eliminating USAID? These poor policy choices result in lost lives; USAID has been vital in preventing severe malnutrition in children. It seems the wealthy prioritize tax cuts over children's lives. Do rural Americans care enough to intervene? So far, not really.
Why would we defund childhood cancer research? Why prohibit providing food and water to voters in long lines? What about the Speaker of the House misleading the public about cuts to Medicaid? Why cut a program that helps millions, especially poor children? Ag Secretary, Brooke Rollins, even suggested that “able-bodied” Medicaid recipients could replace migrant farm workers, showing a disconnect from reality. Republicans seem worried that the poor and disabled are gaining something unjustly while ignoring corporate welfare, like that of the oil and gas industry.
