FORT MADISON – Fort Madison split a boys'/girls' wrestling dual with Mt. Pleasant Thursday night. The Hounds match again came down to the heavyweight match before the Panthers got the win.
But the Lady Hounds rolled as they took advantage of five forfeits for a 54-18 win over the Lady Panthers.
Fort Madison recorded four pins in the other six matches. Mt. Pleasant won one match by forfeit.
Briena Fenton took down Katana Phangchanthong at 125 lbs. just over halfway through the first period by fall to start a string of three straight for the Lady Hounds.
At 130 lbs. Aubree Bunnell needed less than a minute to pin Angelica Miles and then Mara Smith continued her solid season with a second-period pin over Kiyah Sanders at 135. Kat DiPrima, wrestling at 145 lbs., scored a fall over Zenlynn Lee at 1:52 in the first period.
In the boys' dual, Jack Benner (175), Clifford Stewart (190), and Ren Watson (215) put together a string of falls to wipe out a 39-17 Bloodhound deficit and get to within four points of the Panthers with the heavyweight match between Cal Hennings and Mt. Pleasant’s Juan Lopez left to wrestle.
The match got to the mat fairly quickly, but Lopez was able to get a slap at 1:42 in the first period giving the Panthers a 45-35 Southeast Conference win over the Hounds.
Fort Madison got a technical fall from James Fuller at 126 lbs. (21-5) for five points and Ryker Peters scored a pin over Landon Yocum at 150 lbs. for the Hounds' other points. The Hounds also got a 6-point forfeit at 113.
The Hounds host the 25-team Fort Madison Invitational in the Hound Dome tonight starting at 4:30 p.m. The event runs Friday night and starts again at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
