FORT MADISON – Central Lee’s boys' golf team won the annual Lee County Invitational Tournament with a 307 to win the event featuring boys' teams from around the county.
The Hawks' Caleb Larson was medalist on the day with a sparkling 2 over 74 to lead the Hawks to the title. Larson finished the back nine at even par 36, along with Carter Jones and Mylan Lowenberg, but Larson’s 38 on the front propelled him to the top individual score on the day. Jones finished with a 78 and Lowenberg had a 76 to go with Bo Herdrich’s 79 for the 307.
Fort Madison got an even par 36 from Cole Quittem on the front nine at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course, including a birdie on the fourth hole, and then carded a 41 on the back nine for a 77 to lead the Bloodhounds. Brady Wade shot a 79 (40,39) and Rowen Benda carded an 80 (37,43). Colton Boyer and Graeme Meredith tied with 90s, with one of the scores figuring into the top four scoring positions giving the Hounds a 326 on the day.
Holy Trinity Catholic’s Max Kruse shot a 91 for the Crusaders, followed by Brock Scheetz’s 92. Luke Hellige cruised the back nine with a 43, but a 55 on the front pushed him to a 98 on the day. HTC’s other scoring golfer was Blake Mohrfeld with a 96 for a 377 total.
Keokuk was led by Mason Barker’s 95. Carter Land had a 97 to lead the Chiefs to a 399 and 4th place overall.
SEC STANDINGS
Fort Madison is currently ranked 4th in the Southeast Conference after two meets this spring.
The Hounds finished last Monday's meet in Fairfield with a 187 for fourth place. Quittem led the way there for Fort Madison with a 46. Benda, Boyer, and Meredith each carded a 47 on the par-35 course to round out the Bloodhound scoring. On Thursday at Sheaffer's, the Hounds took third with a 175 just a stroke ahead of Mt. Pleasant. Boyer ripped off three birdies on the front nine for a 38 to lead the Bloodhounds. Wade carded a 43 and Benda shot a 45. Quittem and Meredith each had 49s for the final score in the Hounds' total.
Washington has had both medalists with Drew Conrad winning Monday and Rajan Roth winning at Sheaffer's.
Conference play resumes Monday at Keokuk.
HAWKS WIN DUAL
Carter Jones shot a 38 Thursday at Sheaffer to win a boys'/girls' dual between Central Lee and Holy Trinity Catholic.
Jones' two-over par led the Hawks, who are living up to Head Coach Mike Ungerer's pre-season prediction that any Hawk could be medalist on any given day. Mylan Lowenberg shot a 40, while Carson Morrison and Hunter Edlin each carded a 42 to round out the Hawks' 162 score.
Max Kruse shot an 8-over 44 to lead the Crusaders. Brock Scheetz and Blake Mohrfeld each had 48s and Luke Hellige shot a 52 on a cold, windy, and wet Thursday for HTC's 192.
For the girls, the Hawks and Crusaders tied with a 241. Elizabeth Griffin was medalist with a 48 for HTC. Emma Mohrfeld shot a 58, Eva Denning carded a 65, and Calli Kruse shot a 70 for HTC.
Marie Young led Central Lee with a 57. Lily Smith shot a 60, Sydney Gram and Reagan Scott both shot 62s. There was no tiebreaker.
