Crusaders wallop WACO 23-4

Hawks walk-off another home win

WAYLAND – The Holy Trinity Catholic softball team had their biggest offensive output of the season Tuesday night in a 23-4 win over WACO in a four-inning affair.
The Crusaders put up a whopping 14 runs in the top of the first when they put 13 batters up before the Warriors could record an out. HTC went through the lineup twice before a runner was called out for leaving a base early to retire the side.
Holy Trinity would put up seven more runs in the top of the third and two in the top of the fourth to set the mercy rule. WACO scored three in the bottom of the second and one more in the third.
Sydney Jarvis was 3-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. Eight other Crusaders had hits in the game. Emily Ross, Kenna Gittings, Cayden Holmes, Morgan Krogmeier, and Ellie Hellman all had two RBIs in the win. Jarvis got the win, her 14th of the year, going three innings and allowing two hits and four runs, one earned, while fanning five, and walking just one. Hellman pitched a perfect inning of relief. They travel to New London tonight for a 7 p.m. game.
Jarvis is sixth in the state in batting average at .630 (3rd in 1A) and seventh in the state in RBIs with 49 (2nd in 1A).
The Crusaders improve to 18-7 overall and 6-5 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. The 18 wins are seven better than any previous year after the restart in 2019.

Lady Hounds rally comes up short at U of Iowa
IOWA CITY – A six-run sixth inning gave the Fort Madison girls a 6-5 lead headed into the final inning at Bob Pearl Field on the University of Iowa campus Tuesday night, but Newton put up two in the bottom half for a 7-6 win.
The Hounds committed 10 errors in the game but outhit the Cardinals 7-4.
Emma Snaadt took the loss in relief, pitching two innings and allowing three runs, none earned, on no hits. Lucia Darnell started for the Bloodhounds and was relieved by Jordyn Marshall.
The Hounds were held scoreless through five, but Marshall reached on an error to open the sixth. Brylie Lorence then singled to left scoring Marshall. Lumino would draw a walk and Ava Fuget would follow up with a single to left scoring Lorence. After a strikeout, Olivia Buckner singled scoring Lumino and Laci Gathers singled scoring Fuget. Darnell would draw a walk and Snaadt would reach on an infield error scoring Buckner and Gathers for a 6-5 lead.
Fort Madison then committed three straight errors to open the bottom of the sixth – two in the outfield and one infield, to allow the eventual game-winner to score. Lumino opened the top of the 7th with a single to left. She was sacrificed over by a one-out bunt by Taylor Huffman, but a strikeout would end the rally stranding Lumino at third.
The Hounds fall to 9-12 on the year and travel to Centerville Wednesday night for a non-conference 5:30 start.

Fort Madison boys fall to Notre Dame
BURLINGTON – Fort Madison outhit Burlington Notre Dame 9-7, but four errors proved to be too much to overcome as the Nikes downed the Bloodhounds 10-6 Tuesday night in Burlington.
Reece Huey took the loss going 5 2/3, allowing nine runs, six earned, while scattering six hits, and walking six. Tateum Schelich came on in relief and pitched 1/3, allowing one hit and one run while walking two.
The Nikes had a 4-0 lead headed into the fourth inning before the Hounds got on the board. Michael Fuller singled with two outs to drive in Owen Huffman from third. FM would chip away in the top of the fifth when Aiden Mitchell scored from second on a Schelich single to right.
Huey allowed the first three hitters to get aboard in the bottom half of the fifth on a couple singles and a walk. A ground out would score a run and a bunt single would bring in another run for a 6-2 Nike lead. The Nikes continued to play small ball sacrificing another hitter to drive in a run for a 7-2 lead before Fort Madison could retire the side.
A couple bases loaded walks cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the sixth. Notre Dame would add three more in the bottom of the sixth and the Hounds would get two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs, but the rally and game ended with a third out strikeout.
The Hounds fall to 7-19 overall and travel to Mt. Pleasant to get back to Southeast Conference action Thursday night for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Central Lee boys hold off Danville
DONNELLSON – The Central Lee boys could’ve been dealing with a little bit of a Nike hangover Tuesday night as they walked-off another win, this time a 2-1 victory over Danville at home.
Gage Van Ausdall doubled on a shot to centerfield scoring Kayden Calfee with the game winner with one out in the bottom of the seventh. It’s the third time this year the Hawks have won in the final frame.
Calfee reached on a hard single past second base. Chase Johnson would draw a walk before Van Ausdall pounded the game winner.
Central Lee had a one run lead after scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Johnson singled past second scoring Calfee all the way from first. Danville would tie things in the top of the fifth with an RBI single.
Calfee was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored both runs in the win. Mason Sanders, Blake Davis, Johnson, Van Ausdall, and Wyrick all had hits for the Hawks. Wyrick started for Central Lee and went 4 2/3, allowing just one run on a hit while striking out six and walking one. Kellen Weber got the win in relief, going 2 1/3, fanning five and walking three, while not allowing a hit.
The Hawks (17-4, 9-3) travel to Keokuk Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup and to wrap up the regular season. They open post-season play July 8 at home against the winner of W-MU/Wapello with a 5 p.m. start.

39th annual Summer Iowa games this month
AMES — The 39th annual Summer Iowa Games, presented by Grinnell Mutual, are set to begin July 11, with competitions running through July 20. This Olympic-style festival brings together athletes of all ages and skill levels from across the state and beyond, offering a diverse lineup of events in a welcoming, competitive environment.
Centered in Ames and surrounding communities, the Iowa Games aim to make participation accessible for athletes from all regions of Iowa and neighboring states including: South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois.
In addition to the wide variety of competitions, athletes are invited to celebrate the spirit of the Games at the Opening Ceremony and Athlete Tailgate taking place on Thursday, July 18, at Reiman Plaza, beginning at 4:30 PM. This fun-filled FREE event is a highlight of the Games and a great opportunity to connect with fellow participants, as well as see the annual lighting of the cauldron.
