WEST LIBERTY – Kat DiPrima took the title at 155 lbs. at Monday’s West Liberty Invitational to lead Fort Madison to a 3rd-place finish.
The Lady Hounds racked up 132 points behind North Scott and Wilton’s 152 for their third top-three finish of the year.
DiPrima recorded pinfalls in all three of her matches after getting a bye in opening round wrestling. She took Mid Prairie’s Sophie Miller 30 seconds into the second period for the title. DiPrima also pinned Washington’s Ryha Wellington at the 3:31 mark and knocked off Wilton’s Melany Fitzer in under a minute.
The Hounds ran into a buzzsaw of sorts in title matches at 130, 135, and 140.
Aubree Bunnell suffered a pin in the 1st-place match at 130 pounds to Durant’s Ava Streeter 16 seconds into the second period, after rolling to a 3-0 start to the day. All three of those wins were by fall.
At 135 lbs., McKayla Schinstock took a 6-1 lead in the opening period over Alburnett’s Belle Lebeda. Lebeda scored two reversals and a 3-point nearfall at the end of the second period to cut Schinstock’s lead to two at 10-8. Lebeda outscored Schinstock 6-4 in the third period with both girls recording takedowns. But Lebeda would get the takedown early in sudden victory overtime for the title 17-14.
Senior Mara Smith fell in the title match to Alburnett’s Lyni Gusick in the first period. Smith didn’t wrestle more than 30 seconds in any of her first three matches before going up against Gusick, who was listed earlier in the week in the Des Moines Register’s top 50 girls high school wrestlers in the state.
Lyla Smith finished 5th at 145 pounds, while Lucille Zimmerman took 6th at 100, Iris Arevalo finished 6th at 125 lbs., and Tatum Peters took 6th at 170 lbs., falling in the 5th place match by medical forfeit.
