Lowenberg's 84 leads Hawks to state

Jones' 94 breaks tie to send Central Lee to state golf tourney

PELLA - The weather wasn’t the best, and the scores were a little high for the liking for Central Lee’s boys golf team.
Then the Hawks found out they had qualified for the state tournament.
Central Lee finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Class 2A district meet at Bos Landen Golf Resort in Pella, but advanced to state through the tiebreaker. The Hawks will play next Tuesday and Wednesday at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo, one of 12 teams going for the title.
The Hawks tied with Tipton and Beckman Catholic for the final state spot. The tiebreaker was the lowest score among the fifth golfer for each team, and that belonged to Central Lee’s Carter Jones, who shot a 94.
“They were very excited,” Central Lee coach Mike Ungerer said of his team. “Because a lot of them were a little bit down, because these are some of the higher scores that they shot all year. This was the highest score that we shot in a tournament all year. So they were down a little bit, thinking that it wasn't going to be good enough for today, but when they found out that it was they were very excited.”
The Hawks have been dominant all season — they didn’t lose a dual meet and they won every tournament they played in until finishing third in the sectional tournament last week — and they’ve done it with different players leading the way each time.
This time it was Mylan Lowenberg, who shot 42-42—84.
“I think he just battled all the way through the day,” Ungerer said. “The conditions were not very good today, some rain and wind and cold. And I think him just being able to grind out a good score on every hole was the key for him.”
Caleb Larson shot a 42-45—87, Carson Morrison had a 42-46—88, Bo Herdrich had a 47-45—92, and Kaden Swan had a 48-49—97.
“I think (the conditions) were just something that you had to kind of mentally prepare for,” Ungerer said. “It’s not the best conditions, and the scoring, you thought it was going to be higher. The kids were a little bit disappointed in how they started, because they didn't think that they're scoring well enough. But I think the whole field had the same kind of problems.”
It’s the first state berth for the Hawks since 2018.
“We're just going to still keep working on the fundamentals, keep trying to keep that mental approach of never giving up that mentality that every shot counts. We saw that today, every shot is going to count. So you want to keep working on that.”
