Hounds caught in one-run slump

Lady Hawks move to 7-1 in area softball this week

FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison Bloodhound boys dropped their last two games each by just one run in the midst of a seven-game week.
On Wednesday, the Hounds fell 3-2 to Van Buren County at the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville. Fort Madison played at the iconic movie set for the first time ever and had a seventh-inning rally come up short.
Luke Hellige singled to lead off the bottom of the 7th. Michael Fuller came in to pinch-run and scored two outs later when Stefan Berlett reached on an error at third to cut the lead to one a 3-2. A strikeout ended the historical night.
Owen Huffman went the distance for the Hounds giving up three runs all earned on five hits while fanning nine and not issuing a walk. Huffman also had two hits, as did Hellige. Tateum Schelich had the other hit for Fort Madison. Hellige had the only RBI in the bottom of the third with a single scoring Ryan Huey.
Aidan McEntee led Van Buren with a couple hits and two RBI, and got the win going four innings allowing just four hits and a run.
On Thursday, Fort Madison dropped another one-run affair to Fairfield. Fort Madison’s only run came in the sixth inning when Aiden Mitchell doubled to left scoring Huey from second. The Hounds had a runner on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Schelich reached when Fairfield’s pitcher fielded a hard grounder and threw into right field. Pinch runner Eric Cornelis tried to advance two bases on the error and was thrown out at home to end the game.
Schelich had two hits in the game. Brody Cashman, Berlett, Huey and Mitchell had the other hits for the Hounds. Hellige went 6 2/3 innings giving up just two hits and two runs both earned while fanning six and walking three. Schelich pitched a 1/3 giving up a walk.

Holy Trinity girls move over .500
WEST POINT – The Holy Trinity Catholic girls snapped a 3-game losing streak with an 8-0 win over New London-WMU Thursday night at South Park.
Sydney Jarvis got the win for HTC fanning eight and surrendering just three hits against no walks. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a couple RBI.
Alivia Holmes had two singles and Makayla Simpson had two hits including a triple and an RBI to lead Holy Trinity.
The Crusaders scored a run in the second, three in the third on singles by Emily Ross and Jarvis, and a sacrifice by Simpson. They added two in the fourth and two in the fifth.
HTC improves to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Super Conference. They travel to Van Buren County on Friday night and then play WACO and Mt. Pleasant in a Saturday tourney.

Central Lee boys shut out
DONNELLSON – The Central Lee Hawks were shut out 6-0 Thursday night by Mediapolis in Donnellson. Lance Ludens went the distance for Mediapolis holding Central Lee to just three hits all singles and allowed just one walk.
The Bulldogs put up three runs in the top of the third and three more in the sixth on nine hits.
Blake Davis suffered the loss going 4 1/3 allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked three. Chase Johnson came on in relief and allowed three runs on five hits while fanning four and walking none. Davis had two hits for the Hawks and Hunter Edlin had the other. 
Central Lee falls to 3-2 on the year, 1-2 in Super Conference play.
They take on West Burlington Friday night and then host Fort Madison Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Lady Hawks move to 7-1.
DONNELLSON – Central Lee got a walk-off win Thursday night when Marie Young doubled to right field scoring Kenna Sandoval all the way from first base in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 2-1 win over Mediapolis in SEI Super Conference softball.
The Hawks managed just three hits off the Bulldogs’ Payton Harris, but scored both runs with two outs. In the fourth Sandoval scored athe other run when Jalyn Hawk singled her home.
Hawk also went eight innings in the circle scattering seven hits, allowing just one run earned. She had six Ks and a walk.  Hayden Rule got the win going an inning in relief and fanning two.
Carlee Pezley, Young, and Hawk had the three hits for the Hawks who take on Class 3A No. 15 West Burlington Friday night and then host Fort Madison Saturday morning.
