FORT MADISON – The Bloodhounds worked a little short-handed Thursday at the Steve Roth Relays, but won several events and got some good looks at what the outdoor season may hold.
The Hounds finished in 5th place with 68 points in the B-Division.
Senior Julian Dear showed he’s a force in the sprints, winning the 100 and 200 meters with a very strong 22.36 overall in the 200, and flirted with a sub 11 in the 100-meter dash at 11.08.
The 4x800 team of Peyton Lambert, Mason McCley, Riley Tripp, and Nolan Guzman took 3rd overall, but set a top Class 3A mark at 8:16.19. The first-place finishes were worth 10 points each.
“All of them ran a strong leg in the 4x8,” said head coach Keith Helling. “Peyton had one of the more impressive legs starting with a 2:02. These guys are getting faster and faster by the week.”
Gavin Callahan won the 110-hurdles at 16.29 for 10 points and was eighth in the 400-lows at 1:05.81. Lambert also won the 400-meter dash at 53.09.
Guzman finished 3rd in the open 800 at 2:04.86 earning another six points for the Hounds.
The Distance Medley team of Liam Prier, Eric Cornelis, Henry Ireland, and Noah Krogmeier captured 4th place with a 4:06.03.
Helling said this coming week, they are going to shuffle some things up to try to get some of the Hound relay teams qualifying for state and the Drake Relays.
“Monday we’re at West Burlington and we’re going to stack our D-med and see if we can get some good times and try to make it to Drake and state with that group,” he said.
The other relays are works in progress for the Hounds.
“Right now our 4x1, 4x2, and shuttle, we’re starting over with those groups. The kids are pretty fast and we’re getting them coordinated and working on handoffs. It’s coming together. But this year is a reboot for those relays.”
Thursday, the Shuttle Hurdle relay team of Rainer Johnson, Prier, Smrt, and Lucius Zimmerman ran a 1:17.12, good enough for 5th place. Mo Thacher was 7th in the 100 at 12.22. Hunter McGinity-McKasson was 7th in the long jump with a 17’6” leap. Dayton Lamar was 7th in the 100 at 11.95. Marshall Heitman was 7th in the discus at 100’7”.
Fort Madison’s 4x400 team of Justice Lightfoot, Adan Oronia, Noah Schinstock, and Henry Ireland took 7th in the 4x400.
The Hounds should be at full strength going into the week. Kenden Bowie is set to return after sitting out the Roth Relays, and Brayton Schneider should be back spinning the discus this week, as well.
