Hounds get SEC win over Washington 5-1

WASHINGTON – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds rebounded from a loss last week to Burlington with a 5-1 win over Washington Thursday night.
Henry Graham got the hat trick with three goals, all on assists, in the first half to set the tone for the Hounds. Five minutes into the match, Graham scored on an assist from Hunter Wiegand. He would score again eight minutes later off a pass from Connor Horn. He would complete the three-goal game with a double assist from Jacob Shottenkirk and Connor Horn with 18 minutes left in the first half. Shottenkirk would wrap the scoring in the first half with a goal on assists from Noah Swigart and Olive Tackett for a 4-0 lead at the half.
Shottenkirk would score again 10 minutes into the second half off a ball from Swigart. Washington would get their lone goal with two minutes left in the match for the 5-1 score.
Keelynd Ross had three saves in the win.
The Hounds improve to 6-6-1 overall and 5-2 in the Southeast Conference and play host to Mt. Pleasant (10-3-1, 6-0-1) Monday night at Baxter Sports Complex. They wrap up the regular season Friday in Fort Madison.

Weber takes 1st at SEISC meet in shotput
WAYLAND – The Central Lee Hawks' boys and girls got in a final tune-up before state qualifying track and field this Thursday at Prairie City-Monroe.
Aubrey Weber won the shot with a 30’5.5” heave for the only title on the night for Central Lee. However, the Hawks had six runner-up finishes, three for the boys and three for the girls.
Allison Gruntmeir was second in the 100 hurdles with a 17.54 and was second in the high jump at 4’10”. Ava Washburn was second in the 400 hurdles at 1:16.68.
For the boys, Kegan Damico was second in the 400 hurdles with a 57.57 – a season best for him. Ostyn Moore was runner-up in the shot at 39’3” and Owen Krogmeier had a solid discus event finishing at 2nd with a 116’5”.
The boys' sprint medley team of Luke Kruse, Blake Davis, Evan Fogarty, and Brett Cook finished at 1:41.78 for third. Kamryn Cox was third in the 400 hurdles for the ladies at 1:18.38. Kylie Forture was 3rd in the high jump at 4’8” and Weber was third in the discus with a spin of 92’6.5”. The girls finished 5th of the six SEISC South Division teams with 71 points. The boys finished 6th with 43 points.

State qualifying begins at 4 p.m. Thursday at PCM with the top two finishers in each event guaranteed a spot at state, plus others based on performance against the rest of the class in the state.

Hawks fall 6-1 to Hillcrest Saturday
DONNELLSON – Central Lee dropped to 10-3 on the season and 5-3 in the SEI Super Conference with a 6-1 loss to Hillcrest Academy Saturday in Donnellson.
The Ravens (7-3-2, 4-2-2) jumped out to a quick 3-0 first-half lead, scoring in the first 90 seconds and then putting up two more goals in the final six minutes of the first 40 minutes.
Central Lee scored first in the second half to cut the lead to 3-1. Brayden McCarty scored on a set up from Zach Estrada, but Hillcrest would score three more goals in the final five minutes of play to put the game out of reach. Max Jones had seven saves on the night.
The Hawks play Danville Tuesday night in the SEISC tournament quarterfinals with semis and finals played on Friday and Saturday at Central Lee. Action starts at 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.  Substate action starts on May 20 at 7 p.m. with the site and opponent to be determined.
The Hawks downed Albia 2-0 on Thursday. Peter Seyb and McCarty scored both the Hawks' goals. The first came at 20:11 when Seyb scored unassisted. McCarty also scored unassisted with nine seconds left to set the final. Jones had two saves in the win.

Former IHSAA director Saggau dies at the age of 96
BOONE, Iowa – Bernie Saggau, the longest-tenured and most impactful executive director in the history of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, passed away Friday at 96 years old. Saggau’s iconic passion helped turn Iowa into a national leader for school activities during his IHSAA career from 1963 through 2005.
Bernie was born May 18, 1928 to parents Bernhard and Angie Saggau and was raised in Denison. A four-sport student-athlete with the Monarchs, he went on to attend and play multiple sports at Buena Vista College. Prior to arriving at the IHSAA in October 1963, Saggau worked as an Iowa teacher, coach, official, school administrator, and in private business.
Saggau chaired the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee for eight years and served on the NFHS Football Rules Committee for 25 years, and spent time as NFHS board president in 1989-90. During his time at the IHSAA, he officiated NCAA Division I basketball and football and maintained a busy schedule with countless board appointments and public speaking engagements
