Hounds sweep SEC X-Country titles

Lady Hounds 5th in 3A, Boys 16th with districts next up at Williamsburg Oct. 22

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Fort Madison Bloodhound boys' cross country team took first place at the southeast Iowa conference cross country championship in Mount Pleasant on Thursday evening.
The Class 3A 5th-ranked Lady Hounds also captured first place with 29 points followed by Washington with 50 and Keokuk with 71. Mount Pleasant freshman and 3A's 7th-ranked runner Avery Fedler won the girls' event at 18:42.27 followed by Fort Madison's Avery Rump (ranked 13th individually), who finished the 5K at 19:06.03.
Mara Smith finished sixth overall and 5th in team scoring with a 21:47. Jordyn Marshall was on her heels for 7th overall with a 21:50. Ellie Hellman came in nine seconds later for 9th overall and 7th in team scoring at 21:59, and Ellie Huebner wrapped up the scoring runners for the girls at 23:03 good enough for 14th overall and 12th in team scoring.
Other runners for the girls included Eloise Lamb with a 23:10 (15th overall), McKayla Schinstock 23:51 (18th), and Abigail Ralph 25:58 (26th).
Riley Tripp took second place overall for the Class 3A 16th-ranked boys with the time of 16:54.79 and then the Hounds captured 3rd through 5th with Hunter Wiegand at 17:02.44, Nolan Guzman 4th at 17:09.99, and Mason McLey 5th at 17:11.52. Logan McClure broke into the scoring runners for the Bloodhounds with a 13th-place finish at 18:41.52 to give Fort Madison 27 points.
Washington was second with 44 and the host Panthers were 3rd with 103 points. Keokuk finished 6th with 125 points.
Other participating runners for the boys were Oliver Wiese 18:43 (14th), Elie Brunault 19:52 (24), Colton Tripp 20:26 (32nd), Zackary Hermes 20:42 (35th), Jake Haessig 21:09 (44th), Jackson Haessig 23:40 (60th), Kian Koering 25:13 (62nd), and Vance Schuessler 25:44 (64th).
The Fort Madison Junior High girls also won their meet with 33 points, while the boys junior high finished in 3rd with 57.
The teams will now prepare for the Oct. 22 district meet beginning at 4 p.m. at Williamsburg Recreational Center, where the girls will look to avenge just missing last year's 3A state meet and the boys will look to return to state after a two-year hiatus as a team.  The state meet at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge is Oct. 31 for class 3A.
The girls will run at 2 p.m. on Oct. 31, with the 3A boys right after at 2:45.
