Hounds take two from Washington

Fort Madison moves win streak to three games.

FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds have strung together three straight wins and got just their second doubleheader sweep of the season Monday night with a couple wins over Washington.
Fort Madison won the opener 10-5 and the second game 11-1 in 4 ½ innings. The Hounds took two games from Keokuk back on June 2 in the season’s other doubleheader sweep.
Fort Madison jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, highlighted by Brody Cashman’s two-run double. Washington would tie things up in the top of the second on a couple singles around an error and several wild pitches.
Fort Madison would add two in the fourth and four more in the fifth for a commanding 9-3 lead. Washington would get a couple runs in the top of the sixth. Michael Fuller, who went the distance for the Hounds, buttoned things up in the top of the seventh. Fuller allowed just two earned runs, scattering three hits, while fanning two, and walking four.

Cashman went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Tateum Schelich was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. The Hounds racked up 10 hits total. Aiden Mitchell had a multi-hit game, while Owen Huffman, Hunter Cook, and Stefan Berlett each had a hit. 
Luke Hellige pitched a complete game in the nightcap allowing just one run over five innings and giving up three hits. He struck out six and didn’t issue a walk.
Fort Madison didn’t have any extra base hits in the win, but scored 11 runs on just six hits. Mitchell had two hits in three plate appearances with 2 RBIs. Berlett had a two-run single and scored a run. Huffman had two runs scored. The Hounds put up seven runs in the bottom of the third to blow the game open.
Berlett’s 2 RBI-single drove in Cashman and Huffman with one out. Reece Huey singled to left, scoring Berlett and Fuller who came around on a fielding error on the play. A hit batsman and a wild pitch brought in a couple other runs in the inning.
Fort Madison takes on Burlington Notre Dame at 7 p.m. tonight at Winegard field, before heading to Mt. Pleasant for a 7:30 p.m. game Thursday. The Hounds wrap up the regular season Monday night at home against Oskaloosa. They travel to Cedar Rapids on July 11 to take on Xavier in the first round of 3A Substate 5 action.
