HTC boys get 1st win; Smith wins title at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG – Fort Madison placed four wrestlers in the Williamsburg Girls Invitatational on Saturday.
Mara Smith continues to roll through competition going 4-0 on the day claiming the title at 135 lbs. The senior stands at 17-1 on the season after recording three falls including a pin half way through the first period over Cecelia Gryp of Williamsburg. Smith executed a 3-point takedown at the 1:14 mark and quickly turned that into a pin for the championship.
Smith had pins in the first round, and quarterfinals, and scored a 13-2 major decision over Vinton-Shellsburg’s Dakota Hatchel to advance to the finals.
The Hounds compiled a total of 72.5 points for a ninth-place finish in team scoring.
Kat DiPrima recorded a fifth-place finish at 145 lbs after falling in quarterfinal action in the championship bracket. Mt. Vernon’s Adeline Whisner pinned DiPrima in the quarterfinals leading 11-1 at the time of the pin. DiPrima would wrestle all the way back through the consolation side for the fifth-place finish with a pin at 1:58 over Valerie Altenhofen of Williamsburg.
Lucille Zimmerman (7-10) got three points for the Hounds with a 6th place finish at 100 lbs. Zimmerman went 1-3 on the day, and Briena Fenton scored 10 points for the ladies going 3-2 on the day with a pin over Presley McCabe of Center Point-Urbana in the  7th-place match. Lyla Smith scored three points and didn’t place, while Aubree Bunnell (15-5) scored 10 points and didn’t place. Macyn Lampe. Eloise Lamb, Nora Kelley, and Emma Wagner all wrestled.

Rung erupts for 27 in HTC boys’ first win
WACO – Senior Layne Rung scored 27 points, 14 in the second half as the Holy Trinity Catholic boys got their first win of the season Monday night on the road at WACO.
The Crusaders put up 20 points in the fourth quarter behind freshman Jack Ragar’s seven to pull away from an 8-point lead at the end of the third. Ragar finished with 14 and Jay Ellison had 11 for HTC.
Holy Trinity only trailed one time in the game at 20-21 in the second quarter, but went on an 8-2 run to take a 28-23 lead into the halftime break.
The boys are off until Friday when they host West Burlington (2-1) at Shottenkirk Gym in Fort Madison.
